Earliest photo of Kilauea volcano discovered

Photo courtesy Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Officials at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory thought this photo taken in the 1860s was the first photograph ever taken of Kilauea.
But they've now determined it's not — officials say a photo by Hugo Stangenwald (pictured on top) is the earliest known photograph of the volcano. It was taken in 1855, and although it's scratched and faded, the picture shows what appear to be steaming vents across the floor of Kilauea's caldera.
The 161-year-old photo is in the Hawaiian Mission Houses archives.
