Re: [californiadisasters] Wind-whipped fire moves along PCH north of Ventura

If El Nino actually arrives, this should prove to be a huge future trouble spot.

A fire near Solimar Beach reached 250 acres in the early hours Saturday morning, threatened an estimated 30 homes and closed miles of Pacific Coast Highway, according to Ventura County Fire.

Shortly after 1 a.m. the fire had reached the tunnels at State Beaches, off the 101 just north of Ventura. Voluntary evacuations had begun in Solimar Beach and with campers at Emma Wood State Park, according to reports. The fire had also stopped rail traffic through the region.

Firefighters responded to multiple calls of a brush fire shortly after 11 p.m. Friday along Highway 101, which had been closed directions was closed from West Main Street in Ventura to Route 150 in Santa Barbara, according to California Highway Patrol. Drivers were being asked to use Route 150 to bypass the closures.

Access to the 101 from Routes 33 and 150 were also closed.

Firefighters were working on the blaze about 10 miles north of Ventura. Ember from the hillside apparently started a fire on the highway.

By about 11:30 p.m. a water-dropping helicopter had been requested and later deployed. A second copter had also flown to assist with the fire.

Ventura Police Cpl. Quinn Redeker said police were mainly assisting CHP with traffic control. Officers were monitoring the fire and standing by should the blaze become more of a threat for Ventura residents.

"Currently, it's not," he said around 1 a.m.
