Re: [californiadisasters] Earthquakes

Chell,

I'm a little unclear about your question. You use a double negative in your second sentence. So your friend believes that San Andreas IS big enough to have M7.0 or larger quakes? There have already been two upper range M7.0 quakes in historic times and innumerable ones for millions of years. If you go far enough back to when the Farallon Plate was still subducting under California and the plate boundary was convergent we experienced M9.0 range quakes to along with M8's. And yes, Dr. Lucy is a reliable source.

Since we are on the topic of earthquakes, I have two questions? My friend doesn't believe that the San Andreas fault is not big enough to have 7.0 or larger earthquakes. Can we get earthquakes that big? Also last question is Dr. Lucy Jones thinks we can get them that big, I have been to a seminar she put on, is she a person that is believable? She seems to be.
