6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off California

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of California this Friday morning.According to the USGS a 6.3 earthquake struck at 5:36am EST & a few minutes later a powerful 4.7 aftershock occurred just north of the original earthquake.

The original earthquake struck 162 miles south-southwest of Avalon, California. The aftershock then followed about 95 miles south-southwest of Avalon.

Originally, it was thought that a 6.4 and a rapidly following 6.1 earthquake happened within moments of each other. Later it was confirmed that there was only a single initial quake.

No tsunami warning has been issued.
