Mount Soputan Volcano Erupts In Central Indonesia, Spewing Ash

09/18/12 1

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- One of Indonesia's most active volcanos has erupted, shooting ash and smoke nearly 1 1/2 kilometers (one mile) into the sky.

State volcanology official Kristianto says Mount Soputan on central Indonesia's Sulawesi island erupted Tuesday afternoon.

Kristianto, who uses one name, says there is no plan for an immediate evacuation since the nearest villages are outside the danger area of about 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) from the crater.

Mount Soputan is about 1,350 miles (2,160 kilometers) northeast of Jakarta. It last erupted in July last year, causing no casualties.

Indonesia straddles the "Pacific Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanos and fault lines around the Pacific Basin. It has more active volcanoes than any other nation. Another mountain, Gamalama, erupted last week on the Molucca Islands.

The Most Incredible Volcano Video of All Time

"The most incredible volcano video of ALL time." That's how Geoff Mackley—the man in this film—has titled his latest production. After watching it, it doesn't seem like an exaggeration at all. It's truly insane. This guy and his two friends are cray.

It's not the first time that Geoff Mackley gets so close to a volcano. Back in 2010, he almost killed himself. But this one is even closer and crazier than his last stunt. In his own words:

Geoff Mackley, Bradley Ambrose, Nathan Berg, after an epic struggle with the weather for 35 days, we became the first people ever to get this close to Marum Volcano's famed lava lake on Ambrym Island, Vanuatu. Coming within 30 metres of the lava lake down a watercourse, it was possible to stand the heat for only 6 seconds. With Fire Brigade breathing apparatus and heat proof proximity suit it was possible to stand on the very edge and view the incredible show for over 40 minutes.
