[californiadisasters] SoCal SKYWARN Weather Spotter 2012 Update

Skywarn Weather Spotter 2012 Update

By Alex Tardy (NWS San Diego)

We have made a lot of progress in updating the spotter database at the National Weather Service. Meanwhile we continue to get five to ten new weather spotter sign -ups each month and expanded Skywarn activities and interest such as a Skywarn booth at a recent ham fest in San Marcos. We want to continue to provide residence weather spotter training to new and current weather spotters.

Weather spotter training at Chino Hills in their new State Park community center on April 7, 2012.

Future classes will include Apple Valley and San Diego in Au-gust. Please contact Alex Tardy or your Skywarn coordinator for training in your area. During the fall the focus will be on seven to ten winter weather outlooks for Emergency Managers and partner agencies in Southern California.

Alex Tardy talks to the class at San Clemente where discussions focused on fire weather, floods, thunder-storms and tsunamis.
CalEMA and California Geological Survey also presented on the tsunami warning system, the state of the science, the Japan March 2011 event and local impacts.

Entering the town of Dulzura the Sky-warn training is nicely advertised!
