[californiadisasters] On This Date In CA Weather History (July 24)



2009: A long period four foot south swell generated high surf and strong rip currents from this day to 7.26.
Eight to ten foot surf with sets to 12 feet were observed at many south facing beaches, and sets up to 20 feet reported in the most favorable locations.
The high surf also generated strong rip currents, which were responsible for hundreds, or even thousands, of rescues throughout Southern California.
Structural damage and one death occurred.

1998: Bridgeport recorded 2" of precipitation.

1996: Surf from seven to ten feet with sets to 12 feet occurred from this day to 7.26.
It was generated by an intense South Pacific storm south of Tahiti.
More than 500 rescues were made at Southern California beaches.

1984:
Highest minimum temperature records were set each day in San Diego for 15 consecutive days, starting on 7.7 and ending on this day.

1956: Strong monsoon flow hit the region with thunderstorms each day from 7.23 to 7.28, even west of the mountains.
On this day an evening thunderstorm hit Barstow with an estimated one inch of rain in 30 minutes.
Heavy rain also hit Joshua Tree city and roads were washed out.
Flash flooding hit San Bernardino, Riverside and Ontario.
In Apple Valley, floodwaters reached depths of two to three feet.
A severe thunderstorm dropped hail "almost the size of baseballs" and very strong winds at Joshua Tree National Monument.
A Marine Corps party was pelted.

1933:
The high temperature at Lovelock, NV, was 106°.

1931: Searing heat in the San Joaquin Valley.
Many locations saw highs of 110° or better, mainly between the 21st through 26th.
Highs on this date reached 114° at Bakersfield, 113° at Hanford, 112° and 111° at Wasco.

1928 — The high temperature at Sierraville was 104°, and at Reno it 102°.
