Re: [Geology2] Helium Shortage Threatens More Than Balloons

It was definitely Republicans in Congress led by Newt Gingrich.... at the time I agreed with this particular item as it sounded like the worst sort of big Texas pork.... but appearances were deceiving.... we actually needed thing... who knew? ;-p

UNBELIVEABLE!

Who created the nation's helium problem by wasting a scarce resource?

Are these the same who insist no one needs to worry about climate change ruining the earth?

The "Helium Privatization" mandate to empty the reserve, which had operated near Amarillo since 1925, actually occurred during the Clinton administration.

A large chunk of the increase in cost in the last decade has to do with the price of energy to purify it. There are new sources in the Middle East, but the production cost for the U.S. now must include transportation. Algeria has become the second leading producer. Helium is a by-product of oil and gas production.
