[californiadisasters] Eclipse On Sunday Will Display 'Ring Of Fire'

Eclipse on Sunday will display 'ring of fire'

Sunday, May 20, 2012
For the first time since 1994, the western United States will be treated to a rare solar spectacle when the moon slides across the sun, creating a "ring of fire."

Those planning to view the partial eclipse in Southern California on Sunday, which starts about 5:24 p.m., are being warned to either wear protective eyewear or attend planned viewing events to avoid risk of eye injury.

For 3 1/2 hours, the eclipse follows an 8,500-mile path with the ring-of-fire phenomenon lasting as long as 5 minutes, depending on where it's being seen from.

The Griffith Observatory says it's very excited about the eclipse and holding a free viewing party in the afternoon.
