Current Fire Situation:
The Long fire was naturally ignited and was accompanied by precipitation at about 7,000 feet in elevation.  Today, crews are expected to finish constructing line on the north and eastern sides of the fire. Burnout operations are expected to continue today to remove fuels between the fire and the fire line.
The Long Fire met the criteria for a Managed Wildland fire due to its potential to achieve multiple resource management objectives and as the fire posed no immediate risk to life, safety, or property.  Some important resource objectives being met by the fire include; fuel reduction to help with future fire suppression, improving wildlife habitat by reducing older brush and stimulating new growth for deer forage, releasing tree species from brush competition, and reducing the fuels buildup that would contribute to a future wildland fire and subsequently place historic properties at risk.
Fuel Type: Timber and brush
Road/Area Closures:
The following roads are currently closed in order to accomplish the project and provide for the safety of the public and fire personnel:

  • 10NY04E – Choke Cherry Road
  • 10NY04 – Middle Long Canyon Road
  • 10NY05 – Rocky road
  • 10N22 – East Bald Mountain Road
  • 11N23D – Packsaddle Pass Road

There are two trails also closed, the Long Canyon 4WD Trail (16E27) and the Bald Mountain Spur 4WD Trail (16E29).
Weather Conditions: A high pressure system over the area will bring warm and dry weather today. Light winds will be out of the north to northeast.
Health Advisories: These communities along the Highway 50 corridor may be impacted by smoke; such as, Pollock Pines, Kyburz and Strawberry.
Agency Jurisdiction: US Forest Service
