Tangent here: A friend told me of dealing with a problem with Amerindians
taking college coursework. They were bright students, but their papers were
consistently failed by their profs.

Turns out this was a cultural problem. The profs were expecting presentation
of facts and a conclusion, whereas in the students' culture, you gave the
facts and did not insult the hearer by concluding for him/her.

(Problem was solved by an explanation to the students that in the college
environment, they needed to state the conclusions. They did, and did well in
their courses thereafter.)

While I'm "old school", maybe....

No. I think the "new" way is an artifact of students not being taught to
think and reason. Of course, if they were taught that, the demagogues who
want to draw their unthinking allegiance would have a problem.
